An overhead sewer relies on gravity to keep city back up from entering the house. The overhead sewer system diverts sewage from plumbing fixtures on the first and higher floors to a new sewer line run above the basement floor. This line is connected, either in the basement or outside the foundation, to the original sewer as it leaves the building.
This is the standard in construction today for a reason. Bill's Plumbing uses ductile iron pipe in all foundation penetrations.
The old sewer system is sealed. Any drainage from the basement level is directed to a basin and pumped into the overhead sewer line.
This system is the most effective. Power outages will render basement pumps inoperable. Upstairs plumbing fixtures may still be used. Only basement fixtures cannot be used, unless battery back-up or a generator is used.
